Petri Berndtson (Ph.D.) is a philosopher who loves the wisdom of the breath. He is the inventor of Philosophical Breathwork. This new form of breathwork combines the lived experience of breathing with philosophy. Petri understands philosophy in its original way as love of wisdom and thus Philosophical Breathwork is an experiential way to love the wisdom of the breath. The philosophical foundations of this form of breathwork were laid in Petri’s PhD Thesis titled “Phenomenological Ontology of Breathing” (University of Jyväskylä, Finland). Petri’s philosophy of breathing has been called, for example, original, bold and innovative.

Since 2006 Petri has given lectures and workshops on philosophy of breathing at numerous academic and non-academic conferences. For example, he was one of the invited speakers at “Breath Immersion: From Science to Samadhi” conference (Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, USA) in 2015. He is a coeditor with Lenart Škof of the first anthology of philosophy of breathing titled Atmospheres of Breathing (SUNY Press, 2018). Petri has been Full Time Lecturer in philosophy at the Lahti University of Applied Sciences (Finland) and Guest Lecturer at Trondheim Academy of Fine Art (Norway) where he has taught workshops on Philosophical Breathwork. His main research interests and philosophical expertise lie in the experiential phenomenon of breathing, phenomenological philosophy, embodiment, the elemental poetics of air, cultivation of breathing (the meditative methods of mindfulness and zazen) and contemplative studies.
